Tiger is usually orange in colour with black strips, or it can be white colour with black strips, or it can be golden colour with cinnamon strips.
A female tiger is known as tigress and a tiger’s offspring is called as a cub (it is blind for the first week of its life). Tiger posses a powerful and a strong body built, which helps it in easy hunting of its prey.
It has four short but strong and sturdy limbs which helps it in jumping, running and walking on all kinds of uneven surfaces. Tiger is also recognized as a national animal in our country India.
Under the cats category, tiger is a part of Felidae family. Tiger has an excellent nocturnal vision, that is, it has eyes which can see clearly during the night. The ears of a tiger have a highly sensitive tympanic membrane, which aids in better hunting. There are four long and sharp canine teeth in a tiger’s buccal cavity.
Two canines are present in the upper jaw and other two are present in the lower jaw. These sharp teeth help in the strangulation of the prey and keep the tiger healthy by quenching its hunger. The long tail of the tiger helps it in maintaining balance while running.
Tiger mostly hunts for deers, pythons, cows, buffaloes and most of the times hunts alone only. A tiger does not live in groups, prefers solidity and even hunts alone. It’s highly sensitive olfactory receptors (good sense of smell) aids it in locating and attacking its prey easily.
It has a habit of attacking its prey slowly and suddenly, instead of running behind them for a long distance. At one go a tiger can jump a maximum distance of 10 meters. It sleeps during the day and generally hunts during the night. A tiger can adapt well in both ice cold conditions and humid and wet conditions. There are a total of 10 subspecies of tiger, out of which only six are surviving- Siberian Tiger (largest of all), Indochinese Tiger, Bengal Tiger, Sumatran Tiger, Malayan Tiger, South China Tiger. In the primitive time the Trinil subspecies of Tiger got extinct.
Tigers have a 25 years of life expectancy both in the zoo and in wildlife. Tiger’s bones are useful to humans as they are used to cure muscle spasms, back pain, rheumatism, joint pain and stiffness. The strips present on the body of the tiger ( can be of black and cinnamon colours as mentioned above) are unique just like the human finger prints, that is, different strips define different tigers.
Tigers are extremely good swimmers. They mark their territories just like a dog, tiger scratches the bark of the tree and urinates to mark its territory. The Indian Government had launched a “Project Tiger” campaign in 1973 to save the tigers from further exploitation as tigers are already considered as endangered species, and many of the subspecies have become extinct also.
Tigers are killed by the people for it’s skin, bones, teeth, medicines and various other reasons. Tigers should be saved for saving the ecosystem.
